YOUTH NATIONALS CELEBRATES 20TH ANNIVERSARY SHOW!
By Christy Egan
The 2012 Youth National Championship Show celebrated its 20th Anniversary in Albuquerque, New Mexico this past week. Despite the high heat during most of the show, the youthful crowd was upbeat and thrilled to participate. About 800 horses attended the 2012 show and competition was simply better than ever!
Moments to remember? There were dozens, but here are just a few . . . Sarah Beth Womble won multiple National Championships this year, beginning with the HA Pleasure Driving and closing with spectacular rose-winning rides on ROL Firecracker. Holland Stevens won an astonishing seven Championships and three Reserves in English, Hunter and Western Pleasure; Show Hack and Side Saddle. Anna Redmond also took home numerous rose blankets in Western and in Hunter Pleasure. The Desiderio family continues to show the way in the Working Hunter classes with daughter Alex. She won at least a half-dozen National Championships at Youth this year. Julia Bassett and Jenna Upchurch were stars in the Dressage competition, Sydney Dazzo dazzled in Halter, and Ian Robinson won two National Championships and two Reserves in Trail. As always there were brand new stars among the riders. Many young people won their first rose blanket at the 2012 Youth Nationals. Hopefully their first of many to come. We all look forward to great moments next year.
There were many, many others with multiple wins, plus some great stories of hard work, sacrifice and terrific rides – congratulations and kudos to each and every one of you! We know your families are very proud of you. The Parade of Regions ~ Anniversary Party ~ Dog Costume Contest and Racing … the 2012 Youth National Championships finally came to an end on a lovely, warm Saturday New Mexico evening. The soft breeze and the stars peaking through the clouds served as a background for the cheers, laughter and tears of young horsemen and women. There were sighs for those who won’t be returning next year as competitors, and excited anticipation for the youngsters, the newcomers and the returning veterans, already dreaming about the lights, music and roses at the Arabian Youth National Championships, New Mexico State Fairgrounds in July, 2013!
