“Our mare is highly trained and normally a sweetheart. Then suddenly, out of the blue . . . terrible behavior for no apparent reason; bucking, kicking, she even bites!
Believe me, we tried everything . . .”
“Out of the thousands of stories from horse owners I have helped with their problems, this is the tale I hear most frequently, and nearly always it relates directly to Magnesium deficiency,” says Carla Odetto of Performance Equine. “People ask me how I got involved in the business of equine supplements. It wasn’t because I woke up one day and thought, ‘Gee, equine supplements, that could be a good business!’ It was because my best mare, my dream horse, had serious problems and nothing was working. I brought in veterinarians. We tried X-rays and injections. They couldn’t find a problem. My trainer’s suggestion was to ride her more and more but that didn’t help. I tried dozens of saddle pads; switched from one saddle to another. My mare had hypersensitive skin and was consistently sore in the back. Her muscles were tight and rigid. We would have a brilliant work and then suddenly, she would come apart violently. She was angry; I was frustrated.”
Carla Odetto became obsessed with finding the answers and when she chanced upon Magnesium deficiency, the pieces of the puzzle started to fall into place. She started her mare on Magnesium supplements and within ten days there was a marked improvement.
“I did extensive research and discovered that most vitamin and supplement packages don’t contain enough Magnesium to help a horse with a deficiency,” says Carla. “The Magnesium most commonly used, Oxide, is cheap, not very bio-available and of such poor quality that feeding a therapeutic amount usually does little good and often results in a laxative effect.”
Slowly Carla began to work toward developing products that she knew were high quality and would help her horses and all athletic equine performers. Today, Performance Equine products are fed by the owners of the most athletic horses in America; racehorses, Reiners, Hunter/Jumpers, Polo ponies, endurance horses and show horses.
The most popular of these products are commonly referred to as Calming Supplements: high grade nutritional supplements designed to support competitive horses both physically and mentally. Mag Restore™, is one of Performance Equine’s top products. Magnesium is a vital mineral activating over 300 different biochemical reactions necessary for the body to function properly. Magnesium can improve mental and physical performance; reduce anxiety and spookiness. Another top product, Focus Equine, increases a horse’s confidence, trainability and work ethic. It decreases anxiety, excitability, and tension. Owners of high performance horses are confirming excellent results from using these two products in combination for horses exhibiting Magnesium deficiency symptoms as well as overt excitability, anxiety and lack of focus in competition.
“It’s important to note that all horses are a bit different,” says Carla. “Each story and each solution has its subtle variations and we understand that what works today for one horse may not work in the same way tomorrow for another. At Performance Equine we’re told stories all the time about horses that were so completely ruined before they started on the products that they were virtually on the brink of being given away or destroyed.
Expensive, imported show and race horses that were over trained, over raced or shown and found themselves on a spiral headed down. With proper care and concern from a lot of good horsemen these horses are being brought back, ridden, shown and rehabilitated with Performance Equine products. It’s what makes everything we do worth all of the research and effort.”
