In 2011 the President of the UAE Cup Race became the first Arabian race ever run under the iconic twin spires at world famous Churchill Downs race track. In 2012 the same race won a berth for Arabian runners on the card at Pimlico on Preakness Day, a first for that track as well. This year the race is back at Churchill Downs and slated for late evening on Steven Foster Day, second in importance only to the Kentucky Derby’s first Saturday in May at Churchill’s meet. The Grade 1, 1-1/16 miles race offers $100,000 added, making it a handsome purse for the owner and a sterling credential for the winning horse.

Sand Blastt winning at Delaware Park.

Over the past few weeks the race has narrowed from 14 to 8 starters, but they include Darley winners and nominees, and among them are some of the best Arabian horses racing in America today. The current favorite is Valiant Boy SBFAR, the entry of owner Guy Neivens and trainer, Ron Martino. Sired by Darweesh out of Thumbprint by Barbour De Cardonne, Valiant Boy SBFAR is French-bred and raised and was raced successfully in France prior to his arrival in America. The grey stallion began racing here in 2012 and has won five of his eight starts, including the Gr 3 Texas Derby, the Gr 2 Bob Magness Memorial and the Gr 2 Valour Farms Stakes. He was also named the 2012 Darley Horse of the Year. Manager Sharon Clark of Rigbie Farm calls him a “… sensible, good natured horse,” who likes to run long and come from off the pace. Viable competitors in the race include 2012 Darley 3-Year-Old of the Year, Smoke House, sired by Kaolino and bred and owned by Paul and Kathy Smoke. With just three starts, two firsts and a second, Smoke House has shown his determination to run gamely and finish strongly.

Smoke House winning The Delaware Park Arabian Juvenile Championship at Delaware Park on 10/27/12.

Another 4-year-old with obvious breeding and talent is Rosebrook Farms’ Sand Blastt, a Burning Sands son owned by savvy Arabian racing breeder and owner Dianne Waldron and her daughter Leah. Waldron has been breeding and racing Arabians for 30 years and owns around 80 horses, 10 of them currently in race training at Delaware Park.

“Sand Blastt is a full brother to 2-time Darley Horse of the Year Sand Witchh,” Dianne says. “He’s young and up-and-coming, with just four races so far, 2 firsts and 2 seconds.” Well known trainers Randy Nunley and his wife Tracy are working with Sand Blastt, as well as two other President of the UAE Cup entries, Smoke House and Spin Doctor. Breeder Kathy Smoke likes Spin Doctor’s chances in the race. “He’s better than ever,” says Kathy. “He’s big, strong and very game. Watching him come down the lane … he’s like a freight train!”

Valiant Boy SBFAR winning The Bob Magness Derby at Delaware Park on 8/27/12.

Also racing multiple runners in the UAE race is Lynn Ashby, 6-time Darley Trainer of the Year winner. Both of her entries are 4-year-old stallions. The first, In X Hess, is a son of one of Europe’s top Arabian race horses and sires, Dahess, and out of a Wiking daughter. Cre-Run Enterprises and its owners Deb Mihaloff and Alan Kirshner think very highly of this horse. Though he’s only had two races (1,2), he’s run well and shows great potential. The other Ashby entry is the Nivour De Cardonne son, Secret Treasour, a Darley nominee whose 9 races have shown him to be consistently at the top, with only one placing below third thus far in his career.

<img class="wp-image-8096 " style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;" alt="So Big Is Better with Jockey Kelsey Purcell winning at Arapahoe Park.
At 9, the oldest horse in the race is So Big Is Better, like Sand Blastt a son of leading Arabian racing sire, Burning Sand. A veteran of 7 racing seasons, So Big Is Better has more age, more races (46) and a fancier LTE ($215,490) than any other entry. Though certainly older than his competition, “So Big” has been a consistently sound, strong runner through the years, frequently winding up in the money. He’s also noted for his game, big-hearted finishes. Owner-trainer Mark Powell is pleased with Big’s most recent races and has brought in the horse’s favorite jockey, Kelsey Purcell, to ride him in the Churchill race. “He likes her,” notes Powell, “it shows in his races and that’s good!”

Spin Doctor poses at the trainer’s in Florida.

The President of the UAE Cup is just one of several grand races for Arabian horses globally, featuring races at the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe, the Dubai World Cup, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Irish Guineas and Derby days in a number of countries. The Churchill Downs race is slated to run at 10:42 pm Saturday evening June 15th. Attend the race or watch the fun with the rest of the Arabian racing world on www.ArabianHorseGlobal.com.

So Big Is Better is nine this year, but nobody has told the big, grey son of leading Arabian racing sire, Burning Sand that it’s time to hang up his racing plates. Now in his seventh season, “So Big” had his first racing success as a four-year-old at Los Alamitos in California. There he won his second race and set his precedent for a long and consistent career on the track. In fact, his 2012 season was nearly the equal of his two best seasons in 2008 and 2009. So Big Is Better has raced at most of America’s Arabian venues. With 46 races, 20 wins and 10 seconds, he’s had a vibrant sporting life with LTE of $215,490. The races listed in his resume include several stake wins, one in the Gr 2 Valour Farms Arabian Stakes last July, and a strong second place finish in the Gr 2 HH Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Cup Stakes just this last March in Texas.

As a son of Arabian Racing’s top sire out of a daughter of the great Arabian race horse and sire, ZT Ali Baba, So Big Is Better also has a bona fide license to be a good sire in the industry. He is a sound, strong, good-minded runner with the added, always welcome bonus of enormous heart. He’s a fierce competitor, as evidenced by his long, consistent racing record. Riding “So Big” in the upcoming 2013 UAE Presidential Cup at Churchill Downs on June 15th is a jockey with the same kind of “grit” that has colored So Big Is Better’s racing reviews. Kelsey Purcell has galloped and raced all breeds at the tracks and worked for some of the world’s top Thoroughbred trainers. Even better, for owner-trainer Mark Powell, Kelsey immediately “hit it off” with So Big Is Better making the horse and the team even harder to beat. Purcell is a lady jockey and that could be an influence for the handsome grey stallion. “He likes her,” says Powell, “and it shows in his races and that’s good.”

“So Big Is Better has been around,” says Purcell. “He’s older, he loves his job and he shows up. For me, he is an easy horse to ride and he always finishes strong. He has a great heart and I look forward to the race on Saturday night.”

So Big Is Better has his first major foal crop on the ground this spring and will be standing at stud more actively during the next breeding seasons. For information contact Mark Powell, MKP Enterprises, (801) 638-4111, mkpenterprisesut@aol.com.

The 1-1/16 mile race for 4-year-olds and up is on the race card Stephen Foster Day at the historic Churchill Downs track in Louisville, Kentucky, home of the Kentucky Derby. The Arabian race is slated for Saturday evening, June 15th and will feature an impressive $100,000 purse. The President of the UAE race series is the original, premier racing series for Purebred Arabians throughout the world.

Valiant Boy SBFAR winning The Bob Magness Derby at Delaware Park on 8/27/12.

One of the race’s early favorites is undoubtedly Valiant Boy SBFAR, a five-year-old grey stallion, owned by Guy Neivens and trained by Ron Martino, 2012 Darley Trainer of the Year. A son of Darweesh out of Thumbprint, the French-bred and raced Valiant Boy SBFAR, won four of his last five starts in the United States, including the 2012 Gr 2 Bob Magness Memorial Arabian Derby and the 2012 Gr 3 Texas Arabian Derby. His last race was just a little over a week ago on May 27th at Delaware Park. He won it by two lengths, facing four of the horses he will start with in the UAE Cup. Valiant Boy SBFAR was the 2012 Darley Horse of the Year.

“He is a no-nonsense horse that likes to train,” says trainer Ron Martino. “He’s been very reliable in his races so far.”

“He’s a Classic horse,” says Rigbie Farm’s Sharon Clark. “He’s quiet and kind and doesn’t have many issues. It’s difficult to pick out a special race for him from those in 2012. Honestly, all of his races were good.”

Smoke House winning The Delaware Park Arabian Juvenile Championship at Delaware Park on 10/27/12.

One horse that could be some competition for the favorite is Smoke House, a four-year-old grey gelding, owned and bred by Paul and Kathy Smoke and trained by Randy Nunley. Smoke House pressured Valiant Boy in the stretch at Delaware Park to place second in the May 27th race. Last October he won the Gr 3 Delaware Park Arabian Juvenile Championship Stakes and was subsequently named 2012 Darley Three-Year-Old Colt/Gelding in March. Smoke House doesn’t have many races under his belt, but he’s big and strong and very, very game.

Founded in 1874, Churchill Downs fabled twin spires are synonymous with horse racing’s finest traditions. The Arabian breed, forefather of Man O War, Secretariat and Sea Biscuit, will be running its second race historically at this fabled facility. Stephen Foster Day features several major Thoroughbred stakes races, culminating in the Gr 1 Stephen Foster Handicap, the second richest Thoroughbred race at Churchill Downs after the Kentucky Derby. This year the races will be held on Saturday evening, adding prestige, glamour and a lot of dress-up to the festivities. It’s a not-to-missed occasion for Arabian horse devotees. Come in person and join the fun, or watch the race LIVE on Arabian Horse Global at www.arabianhorseglobal.com.

The Buckeye Sweepstakes celebrates 50th Years this May 23rd – 26th!

Judges:

Todd Hickerson Wilton, CA
Myron Krause Fergus Falls, MN
John Lambert Phoenix, AZ

The best way to describe the Buckeye Sweepstakes Horse Show is “Where National Champions are made”! It is also considered the largest Class A Arabian horse show in the country other than the Scottsdale show. It has always been one of the most innovative shows since its inception in 1963. The home of the Buckeye has always been the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio, and always on Memorial Day Weekend.

The Buckeye slogan “WHERE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS ARE MADE!” is proven year after year. If you can win at the Buckeye, you can be a National Winner. The caliber of horses is the best, especially in the performance divisions.

The Buckeye offers National Show Horse District Championship classes, a Progressive Party that is one of the best in the country, different prize money programs, really cool awards, and over $50,000.00 is offered in prize money. It is non stop horse show!

The Buckeye is also famous for their “Progressive Party”. This is held every year before the Friday evening session begins. Spectators and exhibitors are treated to foods provided by the various farms. Folks go through the barn sampling a variety of food, both American and foreign in nature, and then the grand finale is all the different desserts. After eating the best of the best we go back to the show ring for some high level classes and end the evening with the Arabian English Pleasure Association Yearling Futurity. This is a class of future English performance prospects that has the potential of awarding $15,000.00 in this class alone. This is not just a halter class, these horses must have English performance potential, and the judges must judge according to the class rules created for this specific class. The handlers in this class need to be as conditioned as the horses in order to show off the yearling’s full potential.

Everywhere you look there is a feeling of excitement when you spot many of the top stables in the country and some of the most talented exhibitors on those horses we have read about in the magazines.

If you are looking for a show which is highly competitive, with the best of the best in the country performing, mark your calendar for Memorial Day Weekend, we promise you a weekend of fun!

The Buckeye is an industry favorite and enjoyed by thousands all across the country and beyond! If you have a sale horse, a stallion, an event, or a product you want tons of horse lovers to see … place your ad on the feed!

The North Central Working Western Celebration Show is not simply a brand new horse show making its debut appearance at the Simon Arena in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, June 20th through the 23rd, it’s a brand new concept as well! Show manager Sandy Woerle, who conceived and organized this celebration of the Working Western horse, calls it a “Perfect Storm.”

“We don’t have a lot of opportunities to exhibit our Arabian reining and cow horses at local and Regional shows in the Midwest,” Sandy says. “This show is dedicated to the Working Western horse and that’s good news for everyone whose passion is riding reining, working cow and cutting horses. I call it the ‘Perfect Storm’ because the time is right and the interest is there for this event to take off and grow into a premier Midwest horse show.”

In the Midwest it’s normal for the nearest show offering Arabian Working Western classes to be held in Texas or Arizona, and that’s a long trip with horses for someone from Wisconsin or Michigan. For the NRHA Reiners there are more options, the Derby in St Paul and the NRCHA Futurity in the fall, but the NCWW Celebration show is a great addition to their season too.

The NCWW Celebration Show is sanctioned by the AQHA, NRCHA and the AHA. For people showing Arabians and Half-Arabians it is a Region 10 qualifying show. Those showing under the auspices of the NRCHA and AQHA are looking forward to the show’s offerings of a Derby and a Bridle Spectacular with over $7,000 in added prize money in Open, Non-Pro, Non-Pro Limited and Rookie classes. There’s also the White River Ag Products Reining Shoot Out, featuring prize money and a ton of pelleted straw bedding, in addition to specially designed trophy buckles.

Eleanor Hamilton, ARHA President and owner of Eleanor’s Arabians, is sponsoring one of the show’s main competitive events … the Hesa Zee+/ All-Breed Reining Challenge. There are eight divisions in this special $8,000 added event. Hesa Zee+/, leading Arabian Reining Futurity Sire in 2012 and the top siring son of leading all-time Arabian Working Western Sire, Xenophonn, will make a special, personal appearance at the show. All breeds … Quarter horses, Arabians, Half-Arabians and others, will be competing against each other in the Hesa Zee+/ All Breed Open $2,000 added. One-of-a-kind headstalls, complete with show bit and a matching trophy buckle designed by Dale Chavez, will go to the Champion in each of the Hesa Zee+/ Challenge divisions. Another great complement to the show will be The Ultimate Futurity, a futurity/maturity designed to promote the Arabian and Half-Arabian stock horse. A great money program, TUF makes the pay back and prizes as bountiful as possible and prizes include Bob Berg belt buckles, embroidered vests and horse coolers.

In addition to the prizes for each of the cutting, cow horse and reining specialty events there will be awards for All-Around Performance Horse, sponsored by Barker Creek Ranch, and an Arabian/Half-Arabian Versatility Award provided by Firecreek Farwa. Door prizes will be awarded to spectators throughout the show and an Exhibitor’s party hosted by Markel Insurance is scheduled for Friday night. Each morning coffee, juice and Danish will be available for the early-arriving horse show goers. Show amenities will also include live streaming of the show by America’s number one Arabian live streaming company – Arabian Horse Global!
Judges for the show are Tim Stewart of Paso Robles, California, Janette Dublin, San Angelo, Texas and Leo Fourre from Edina, Minnesota. This summer join the fun and excitement at the North Central Working Western Celebration Show, Simon Arena, Cannon Falls, Minnesota, June 20th through the 23rd.

He loped out of the ring with the U.S. Reserve National Champion garland around his neck and Stanley White III in the saddle. In 2008 and 2009 the pair was Top Ten in the U.S. National Western Pleasure Junior Horse Championship. In 2010, they were Top Ten in the Open.

“I’ve been a U.S. Top Ten or better each time that I’ve ridden him at the U.S. Nationals,” says Stan White III. “In 2011 after just a few weeks of practice, Just Joe and Logan Chisholm were Youth Reserve National Champion Western Pleasure 14-17. In 2012 the team went Champion Western Pleasure JO and JT 14 – 17 at Region 9.”

His trainer notes with satisfaction that Just Joe has a great disposition and has exceptional trainability. The truth is Just Joe likes his job and he likes to work.

“He handles all of it very well,” says Stan. “The travel, the change of riders during the show season and the different shows, fairgrounds and show rings.”

Just Joe is a handsome stallion with a long, well-shaped neck and an elegant way of moving. With a sire line noted for its great beauty and talent in the Western Pleasure division and a dam line with the finest of *Bask+ and Khemosabi++++// breeding, Stan notes that Just Joe is “ … a horse with a phenomenal lope and beautiful quality in motion.”
